Education experts from 5+5 Defence Initiative countries have attended the first experiential learning course

A communication course based on experiential learning was held from 26 through 29 March in the framework of the 5+5 Defence College initiatives.

Under the umbrella of the 5+5 Defence College initiatives, 12 officers from the armed forces of Algeria, France, Italy, Morocco, Mauritania, Spain, and Tunisia have interacted and benefitted from experiential learning during a course aimed at developing cross-cutting skills applicable to communication issues and techniques.

Experiential learning differs from traditional classroom-based education as the former entails the strong involvement of trainees. Traditional learning methodologies and instruments do not play as second fiddle but are rather used to systematise and reinforce learning, and favour the transfer of behaviours learnt on one's own job.

The choice of such a theme is linked to the need of developing cross-cutting behaviours and attitude that may prove useful when applied to education on defence and security of Wester Mediterranean countries, that is, the main focus of the 5+5 Defence Initiative.

Being the first out of the two modules on communication the Hermes project is about, the course was fully appreciated by the participants and entirely delivered in French by the Vocational Orientation and Development Branch, Personnel Department, Army General Staff.
